On
the occasion of Diwali, Meher Bijlani has organised a unique
show of cabinets and lamps in Mumbai at her gallery, Art Quest.
The
show is unique because Bijlani has collected old cabinets
of different shapes, and restored and them with utmost care
that the original structure of the cabinet is not changed.
These cabinets which have motifs painted on them, can be used
in various parts of the home – the living room, bedroom,
bathroom, kitchen, dressing area etc. |
Some
of these cabinets have mirrors and porcelain knobs and can
be used for any purpose depending upon its shape and size.
Bijlani
says, “These cabinets are basically meant for people
who are house-proud and are looking for something off the
beaten track. Besides being highly artistic, these pieces
add a lot of colour and fun to a home.”
Some
of the lamps on display are of familiar shapes and sizes.
She says: “What makes these lamps unique is the fact
that they are painted and are one of a kind. But there are
certain pieces, which are absolutely unique in shapes, sizes
and the ideas behind them.”
The
items on display include A double bottle lamp, a fish tank
converted into a large lamp and a Victorian lamp. Also on
display are a couple of antique (1915) manufactured candle
stands made by Newton Shakespeare & Company, and many
more heritage items.
The
other participating artists include: Yashwant Sonwane, Prashant
Hirlekar, Amrutraj Koban, Vijay Belgave and Anand Panchal.
The exhibition will be on till November 18 at Artquest, Shop
No. 1, Daulat Building, Next to Colaba Post Office, from 10
am to 9 pm.
